Seagate Space Corporation has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Firefly Aerospace to investigate the creation of an offshore launch platform. This collaboration aims to establish a sea-based launch capability for the Alpha rocket, according to a Monday announcement.
Sean Fortener, president and COO at Seagate Space, stated, “Partnering with Firefly to align our Gateway platform with their Alpha vehicle is a major step toward making offshore launch a practical reality for the industry.” The company described its Gateway technology as a “clean break” from previous approaches involving converted barges or repurposed vessels.
This offshore launch system is expected to provide the Alpha rocket with access to additional orbits and inclinations. Seagate Space plans to work closely with Firefly to refine the design of an integrated offshore launch system capable of supporting the Alpha vehicle.
In other launch news, Isar Aerospace has postponed its scheduled launch attempt for the Spectrum rocket. The Germany-based company had set a launch window to open at 20:00 UTC on Thursday, April 9. Approximately one hour before the window was to begin, the company announced a stand-down to evaluate a suspected leak in a composite overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV). Teams are currently assessing the issue and will determine next steps.
